Guy Saint-Jacques on Co-existing with China

In November 2018, Guy Saint-Jacques, Canada’s Ambassador to China from 2012-2016, spoke to NLC about the implications of China’s ambitious new foreign policy for Canada. A few short weeks later, Huawei's Meng Wanzhou was arrested by Canadian authorities, the two Michaels were detained, and Canada’s relationship with China, to say the least, soured. 

Today, allegations of Chinese interference in Canadian elections and China’s “limitless friendship” with Russia dominate the headlines. As a delicate balancing act becomes a geopolitical conundrum, how does Canada navigate?
